We are sailors, we own our own boats. We saw a need for a value for money web site where boaters can find crew, crew can find boats.
You can find crew or a perhaps a delivery skipper/captain.
You can find a boat to crew on.
Because there is no other crew finder website offers better value for your hard earned money.
We think that it is memorable.
Membership & Subscriptions
There are two types of membership:
If you are looking to crew on a boat or are a Delivery Captain, this is the profile type for you. Signing up for membership is FREE, but with limited access. For full access you will need to upgrade your membership to Full Membership. Please see Subscriptions, below.
Boat / Owner member:
If you own or operate a boat (excluding delivery captains and charter operators), this is the profile type for you. Signing up for membership is FREE, but with limited access. For full access you will need to upgrade your membership to Full Membership. Please see Subscriptions, below.
Both Boat Owners and Crew Members need a subscription to full access to all the features of Desperate Sailors.
There are three types of subscriptions for Crew members.
Weekly Subscription or Gift Subscription:
Full access to the Desperate Sailor web site for 1 week. When your subscription expires, you become an Free Member. Best value if you are in a region for a short period of time.
Half Yearly Subscription:
Full access to the Desperate Sailor web site for 6 months. When your subscription expires, you become an Free Member. Best value if you stay in one location and it is seasonal.
Full access to the Desperate Sailor web site for 1 year. When your subscription expires, you become an Free Member. Best value for year-round services.
No. We want to give you the best possible value for your money and as such, you can become as Full Member as and when it suits you. When your subscription runs out, you will automatically become an Free Member (see Membership and Subscriptions Types, above) until you decide you need to become a Full Member again.

You do not need one. PayPal offer credit/debit card payments without having to open an account.
Please check your JUNK mail folder. If it is not there, please let us know. Contact Us. There is an issue with Hotmail. They are draconian with their spam filters. So if you used a Hotmail account to register and did not get an activation email, let us know and we will activate you manually.
If you own or operate a boat, you should create a Boat / Owner Profile.
If you are looking to crew on a boat, you should create a Crew Profile (including charter operators and delivery captains/skippers).
Click on Profile, Edit Profile.
As much as possible. The more information that you supply, the more chance there is of another member being able to decide if they would like to contact you.
Boat / Owner and Crew Profiles are not allowed to show any contact information eg email address or phone numbers.
Click on My Profile, My Profile.
Yes, to a limited extent you can. All the comment fields support the following BBCode: [b], [i], [u]

Click on Settings, Account.
Please check for the activation email in your JUNK folder. If it is not there, please click on Contact Us and send us your details. We will then activate you manually.
Click on Settings, Notifications and select what notifications you do or don't want to receive.
Hiding your account has the same effect as suspending it. Only your friends will be able to see your profile. Click on Settings, Privacy and make the appropriate changes
To delete your account, click on Settings, Privacy and click on Cancel Account from the "Who can view my profile" drop down menu. Please note: This cannot be undone and all your messages, friends, preferences will be lost.
Click on My Profile, Profile Summary and look at the bottom of the Quick Info list.
Desperate Sailors DO NOT store any of your banking or credit card details, ever. For all subscriptions, we use PayPal and that is where your information is stored. For this reason, never respond to an email request, pertaining to be from Desperate Sailors, asking you for your banking or credit card details because it is definitely a scam.
No problem. From any screen, on the left you will find a login box. At the bottom it says "forgotten password". Click on the link and follow the instructions.
Unfortunately not. You need to create another account for each profile type that you have. You will need a unique email address to do this. If you don't have an alternative email address, it is simple enough to create a FREE one using Hotmail, Gmail or perhaps, Yahoo.
Desperate Sailors DO NOT store any of your banking or credit card details, ever. For all subscriptions, we use PayPal and that is where your information is stored. If you ever receive an email asking for your credit card or banking information where the sender is claiming to be from Desperate Sailors, it is definitely a scam. Please ignore the email.
Desperate Sailors will never sell, distribute or add your details to any mailing list of any third party.
All Full Members can. You can change this by clicking on Settings, Privacy and change your settings.
Go to their profile and click on Block Member. Please report any abusive emails to Desperate Sailors. You can do this from the message or the abuser's profile by clicking on Report (bottom right of the message).
To block someone from contacting you, click on their profile and at the bottom right of their details, click Block member.
To unblock a member, click on Settings, Blocked, Remove.
Click on Profile, Change Photo and follow the on screen instructions. To crop your photo, click on Edit Thumbnail. To delete your photo, click on the delete.
All pictures must be approved by admin, which is usually done within 24 hours. We do this to help prevent spam and explicit adult content.
For a photo that is in your album, the largest size is 640 x 480. If you don't have the know-how or software to resize your pictures, please email them to us and we will gladly do it for you. You can find our email address by clicking on Contact Us
For a profile photo the smallest size is 100 x 100px and the largest is 640 x 480px.
Everyone can. You can change this my clicking on Settings, Privacy and change your settings.
One hundred, and you may upload a maximum of twenty four pictures per album.
You must be a valid member and logged in. Click on My Stuff, My Pictures, click on the Create Album tab and follow the instructions.
We have no idea what software you have on your computer. In most cases if you click on the photo, once it opens, there should be an edit or resize option. If you are still have problems, you can email the picture/s to us and we will resize and upload them for you. You can find our email address by clicking on Contact Us
Desperate Sailor Web Site Functions
It sends a simple message to the person that you'd like to introduce yourself to. Below is are the messages:
- Nice boat profile. Is the position aboard still vacant?
- Nice crew profile. Have you found a position yet?
Anyone can, even Free Members can.
Click on the member's profile that you would like to contact. You can send them a message if they are a Full Member. Click on Send Message (below their picture).
Only Full Members can send a private message to another Full Member. Free Members cannot send or receive private messages.
